Separately, Apalachicola Riverkeeper has won a hard-fought legal fight to stop one exploratory oil drilling permit in the floodplain of the Apalachicola River. On June 16, the Florida DEP denied Clearwater Land and Minerals a permit to drill. This is a win for the River, the Bay, and the Floodplain that buffers the Apalachicola River. It’s also a win for the people whose livelihoods are connected to the water.  Let's finish the job for good, with the passage of the Kill the Drill Bill.

*HB 1143/SB 1300 provide protections for the economy, culture and ecology of the Apalachicola River Basin by prohibiting drilling, exploration, or production of oil, gas, or other petroleum products within areas of counties designated as rural areas of opportunity that are within 10 miles of a national estuarine research reserve. This would cover all of Apalachicola Bay and most of the upstream river basin.
